Vitaly A. Kushnir MD

Dr. Kushnir has treated thousands of patients from all over the world for a variety of fertility issues. His focus has been on advanced reproductive age, low ovarian reserve and third-party reproduction. Dr. Kushnir works closely with urologists to treat couples with severe male factor infertility.
Dr. Kushnir has been a recipient of numerous awards, including NY Top Doctors award recognizing his achievements in clinical practice, and the Excellence in Research award at Emory University recognizing his research on the role of mitochondria in female reproductive aging.
Experience
An internationally recognized fertility specialist, Dr. Kushnir has authored over 90 peer-reviewed manuscripts in leading medical journals and many book chapters on topics in reproductive endocrinology and infertility. Dr. Kushnir serves as Associate Professor of OBGYN at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) and holds hospital admitting privileges at UCI Medical Center.
Prior to relocating to California, Dr. Kushnir practiced in New York City. He served as the Director of Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center and as an attending physician at Lenox Hill Hospital, where he performed surgery. Dr. Kushnir also previously served as clinical Assistant Professor of OBGYN at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC. He previously served as a consultant for the Division of Reproductive Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Dr. Kushnir is dual board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology, as well as Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.

Dr. Perkins is a highly skilled, board certified Obstetrician & Gynecologist, with a focus on fertility issues. Originally from Kansas, Dr. Perkins attended Southern Methodist University and earned her medical degree from Des Moines University in Iowa, where she excelled academically as a member of the Sigma Sigma Phi and Student Osteopathic Surgical Association honor societies. Dr. Perkins completed her residency at the Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center/Rutgers NJMS in Livingston, NJ.
Experience
Dr. Perkins brings a wealth of knowledge and ten years of women’s health experience to her practice. Prior to joining West Coast Fertility Centers in 2024, she was an OB/GYN in private practice affiliated with Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, the highest ranked hospital in Orange County. Throughout the years of practicing low and high-risk obstetrics, performing minimally-invasive gynecological surgeries, and caring for women throughout all stages of their lives, she developed a true passion for working with patients experiencing infertility. Dr. Perkins is dedicated to providing individualized care to her patients, prioritizing their concerns and delivering exceptional treatment.

Success and Excellence
Shelby Colburn, MSN, WHNP-BC serves as a supportive nurse practitioner here at West Coast Fertility Centers in our Fountain Valley office. She joined our practice in 2023, where she works closely alongside Dr. Kushnir to provide high-quality fertility care.
Shelby studied biology at the University of Minnesota, Morris before earning her bachelor's of science in nursing from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She received her nurse practitioner training at The Center for Reproductive Health, Southern Women's Care, and Holy Cross Urgent Care. She earned a master's degree in nursing from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Experience
Shelby has dedicated countless hours to serving women in many capacities. She previously practiced as a Registered Nurse for five years in labor, delivery, postpartum, and newborn nursery settings. Her passion for fertility care encouraged her to earn a Reproductive Endocrinology Nurse Certificate through the American Society of Reproductive Medicine. Shelby is a patient-centric, empathetic, and compassionate Nurse Practitioner who provides comprehensive and individualized care to all her patients.

Embryology and Andrology Laboratories
Located on the top floors of modern medical buildings in Los Angeles and Orange County, our embryology and andrology laboratories are designed to optimize outcomes for patients undergoing fertility treatment. Our facilities feature positive air pressure systems with advanced air purification to remove airborne pathogens and chemicals, ensuring the cleanest possible environment. A dedicated backup generator and battery systems ensure a continuous supply of power in the event of a power failure.
We exclusively use modern benchtop incubators which are designed to mimic the environment of a woman's body during embryo culture. Independent incubator chambers for each patient prevent disturbance to the neighboring chambers even when the lids are opened. Digital recording of temperature and a tri-gas flow system helps our embryologists achieve the best possible outcomes. Multiple quality assurance and security systems are used to maximize the safety of gametes and embryos in our labs.
Each member of our senior embryology team has extensive experience in the field of IVF including key procedures such as micromanipulation, intracytoplasmic sperm injection, laser-assisted zona hatching, embryo biopsy, oocyte and embryo vitrification.
Our laboratories and tissue bank are licensed by the California Department of Public Health and accredited by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) through Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA). West Coast Fertility Centers are also registered with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) which regulates third-party reproductive services. We report annual anonymized IVF outcome data to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as required by law.
